Of the five cottages scattered across the Lochshiel Estate near Acharacle, 45 miles from Fort William on the west coast of Scotland, Dorlin Cottage has arguably the most spectacular view, looking over the beach to iconic Castle Tioram in the bay.

A most attractive, detached, double-glazed stone house, it stands in its own large garden grounds (with furniture), just a stone's throw from the shore. Inside it has been beautifully furnished in a pleasing, classical style to complement its traditional character.
The huge, flagstoned dining kitchen has all modern appliances while long lazy evenings may be enjoyed in front of the open fire in the snug and elegant sitting room. Also downstairs is a shower room, while upstairs are three good-sized bedrooms with coombed ceilings and a bathroom.
Just to add more local colour, deer frequently visit the areas around the house and the whole area abounds with wildlife.
The Estate and the area in general offer endless opportunities for walking, while children will play happily for hours on the numerous quiet beaches.
Acharacle (2 miles) has shops and a hotel and from there you can explore the Ardnamurchan peninsula, perhaps taking the ferry across to Mull, visiting the golf course at Traigh - one of the most scenic in all Britain (the name simply means 'beach'), or a trip to Skye via the ferry from Mallaig. Prepare to also be beguiled by the silver beaches and turquoise waters of Arisaig and Morar, with their wonderful views of Rum and Eigg.
Ardnamurchan Point is the westernmost point of mainland Britain. There is a Stevenson lighthouse right at the tip and the sands at Sanna Bay are justly famous. The road along there (turn west at Salen) is a delight in itself and en route you will pass the RSPB reserve at Glenborrodale, where in addition to many birds such as wood warblers and redstarts you may also see otters and red squirrels.
To the north, the trip via Lochailort and 'The Road to the Isles' is equally rewarding. The little port of Mallaig lies at the end of it, from where you can take boat trips to Knoydart for spotting whales and other marine wildlife.
If you turn east at Lochailort, along Loch Eilt, you will come to historic Glenfinnan at the head of Loch Shiel, where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at the beginning of the ill-fated Jacobite revolt of 1745. The site is owned by the National Trust and visitors can climb the memorial column there for a little bit of Scottish history.
