Tucked away within its own charming gardens on the rural Elliston Estate near Melrose (5.5 miles), Gardener’s Cottage offers a peaceful base in the heart of the Scottish Borders. Detached and quietly positioned, it’s the sort of place where you can properly slow down.
The sitting room is warm and welcoming, with a wood-burning stove that makes cooler evenings something to look forward to. It’s an easy space to relax in – whether that’s reading by the fire, chatting long into the evening or simply enjoying the quiet. There is WiFi if needed, though you may find you don’t miss it.
The bright dining room sits at the heart of the cottage, with the neat, well-equipped kitchen just off it. There’s plenty of room to gather round the table and make meals feel unhurried, whether it’s breakfast before heading out or supper after a day exploring the Borders.
On the ground floor, the bathroom includes both a walk-in shower and a bath for a long soak, while oil central heating keeps the cottage comfortably cosy throughout. Upstairs, two double bedrooms offer king-size beds (which can be arranged as twins if preferred) and lovely views across the garden.
Outside, the generous lawn and mature trees provide plenty of space for children and dogs to burn off energy. The walled garden area feels private and secure, ideal for relaxed afternoons outdoors. There is parking for up to three cars.
The estate itself is quietly picturesque, with a loch at its centre where swans drift across the water and sheep graze in surrounding fields.
For larger gatherings, Gardener’s sister propertiesByreman’s Cottage (sleeping 6) and Coachman's Cottage (sleeping up to 8) only a couple of minutes’ walk away.
Several different walking routes can be tackled with the choice of trying parts of St Cuthbert’s Way that goes from Melrose (5.5 miles) over to Holy Island off the Berwickshire coast, or the Southern Upland Way that stretches across the whole country, to name but two of the most popular.
Head into Melrose for a wander around this very picturesque town that has plenty of shops and also a fascinating history. The Trimontium Museum on the town square tells the story of the nearby Iron Age Roman settlement and houses an array of artefacts from the site, with weekly guided walks that run right out to it.
For adventures on two wheels, the quiet surrounding roads allow cyclists to explore the countryside easily. Mountain biking trails are dotted all around the area and the nearby trail that loops around the Eildon hills is a particular favourite. There is also the chance to visit the two excellent 7stanes mountain biking centres at Innerleithen (20 miles) and Glentress (26 miles).
Kelso (12.5 miles) has a whole host of attractions with a stunning 18th century castle set in gorgeous grounds, a race course with a programme of meets throughout the year, a picturesque 18-hole golf course to perfect the swing on and a range of interesting little shops, pubs and eateries.
Of course, being so close to Scotland’s amazing capital city it would be a real shame not to fit in a day trip up to do some shopping or see some of its many historic sights. Edinburgh Castle is sure to be at the top of the list, along with the huge Scott’s Monument (with 287 internal steps leading up it for stunning views of the city) and the chance to see the fine pieces on display at the Scottish National Gallery.
