Boat of Garten & Grantown on Spey
A little to the east of Aviemore are the villages of Boat of Garten and Grantown-on-Spey. Boat of Garten is perhaps most famous for its wildlife, in particular as the place where osprey were first reintroduced into Britain.
There are also plenty of other attractions in this area with wonderful hill walking, the Strathspey Steam Railway, fishing on famous rivers and visiting the numerous distilleries in the surrounding area.

Lots to See and Do

Boat of Garten, 'The Osprey Village', is set among quiet woods and heather hills in the heart of the Cairngorm National Park. In addition to its fame as a centre for wildlife, it also offers a scenic 18 hole golf course and, being on the Spey, there is fishing close by and, of course, skiing on the Cairngorm. You can even arrive on the Strathspey Steam Railway which plies via Boat of Garten between Aviemore and Broomhill.
Grantown is your archetypical Highland town, which started life as a planned settlement in the 1760s and is now a bustling centre for the local area, with hotels, cafes and restaurants and a good selection of small private shops. People come from all around to the Grantown Agricultural Show and the Grantown Highland Games, both held in August.
The town is surrounded by ancient woodlands which teem with wildlife and are traversed by waymarked trails. There is no lack of good hill walking either - Anagach Woods offer miles of great mountain biking trails which link in to longer routes on the Dava Moor and Cromdale Hills. In addition to its fame as a fishing and whisky river, the Spey also offers excellent kayaking.
