Kincardineshire
This ancient county stretches from north of Montrose up to the edge of Aberdeen and inland as far as Banchory on Royal Deeside. It covers the area of The Mearns (A' Mhaoirne, meaning 'the stewartry'), immortalised in the novels of Lewis Grassick Gibbon.
At its southern end, the village of St Cyrus is a popular seaside holiday destination while just south of Stonehaven is the amazing clifftop ruin of Dunottar Castle, deemed so impressive that Microsoft used it for one of their screen backgrounds!
