Nestled in the upper reaches of Glen Lyon, Scotland's longest and arguably loveliest glen, Balnahanaid Farmhouse is surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The journey to the farmhouse takes visitors through landscapes of steep, tree-lined hillsides along the River Lyon, gradually opening into expansive moorlands framed by dramatic mountain vistas. Despite its peaceful seclusion, the farmhouse remains conveniently accessible — only 17 miles from Aberfeldy, 30 miles from Pitlochry, and 50 miles from Perth.
Approached via a well-maintained, mile-long track, Balnahanaid Farmhouse sits at the edge of a working farm. The property features an extensive garden with a large paved patio, ideal for barbecues, al fresco dining, wildlife watching, and stargazing. A small river flows along the garden's boundary, so care should be taken with children and dogs, especially as sheep roam freely nearby.
Inside, the farmhouse welcomes guests through a spacious hallway into a comfortable sitting room, featuring a traditional open fire, direct garden access, and panoramic views of Glen Lyon. The adjacent dining room comfortably seats six guests and is warmed by both a wood-burning stove and an open fire, complementing the farmhouse’s oil-fired central heating.
A convenient pantry links the dining room to a modern, fully equipped kitchen complete with a dishwasher, electric oven, ceramic hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, generous storage, a kitchen island, and an informal dining table for four, all complemented by further spectacular views. A practical utility and boot room adjoin the kitchen, housing a washing machine and tumble dryer within a large cupboard. A compact study/office space and a WC complete the ground floor.
An elegant staircase leads upstairs to three ensuite bedrooms, each featuring flexible twin beds that can convert into super-king-size beds. The staircase splits gracefully, with one branch leading to a bright bedroom with an ensuite shower room, and the other branch providing access to another inviting twin/double bedroom and the master bedroom, which includes an ensuite bathroom with bath and overhead shower — perfect retreats after a day exploring the glorious Highlands of Perthshire.
Balnahanaid Farmhouse sits in splendid isolation high in the hills, yet is only four miles from Bridge of Balgie, a picturesque hamlet above the River Lyon with a Post Office and a highly acclaimed tea room. Nearby, the fascinating art gallery at Keltneyburn (12 miles) showcases incredible sculptures crafted by local blacksmiths from scrap metal. This lovely farmhouse is also just 16 miles from Killin, where you’ll find good restaurants and cafés overlooking the famous Falls of Dochart.
For a wider choice of amenities, Aberfeldy (17 miles) is the nearest bustling town, with a supermarket, excellent places to eat including The Three Lemons and KB’s Italian Kitchen, several traditional pubs, an award-winning bookshop and an independent cinema, The Birks. On the way to Aberfeldy, Highland Safaris and the Red Deer Centre offer four-wheel-drive adventures through the glens, the chance to feed red deer and a barn owl fly-by experience.
A night at the theatre is even possible when staying at Balnahanaid Farmhouse. Pitlochry Festival Theatre (30 miles), overseen by Hollywood actor and local lad Alan Cumming, hosts a first-class programme of performances.
This part of Perthshire is rich in history. Learn about Bronze Age life on Loch Tay at the Scottish Crannog Centre (13 miles), visit Castle Menzies (21 miles), the 16th-century seat of Clan Menzies, or marvel at the 20th-century engineering feat of the hydro dams at the head of Glen Lyon (6 miles).
Hillwalkers and climbers have a wealth of options on the doorstep. Balnahanaid Farmhouse is surrounded by the Glen Lyon Horseshoe, featuring four Munros: Cairn Gorm, Meall Garbh, Carn Mairg and Meall na Aighean. Take a hike to the Praying Hands of Mary, a massive stone slab that rises dramatically from the landscape before splitting in two — legend says it was cleaved by an arrow fired by a Celtic warrior.
For a scenic day out, drive from Glen Lyon to Rannoch Moor, with its captivating views across the Cairngorms Plateau. Rannoch Moor is home to the UK’s most remote railway station (40 miles), where you can catch a train to Fort William for the day. If you linger to explore, don’t forget insect repellent — Rannoch is notorious for its midges!
Guests at Balnahanaid Farmhouse can book fishing or shooting on Roro Estate, while water sports enthusiasts can head to Taymouth Marina near Kenmore (14 miles) for kayaking, paddleboarding and bike hire. Keen for a wild swim? The beach at Kenmore offers relatively easy access to the peaty waters of Loch Tay.
Balnahanaid Farmhouse may feel gloriously remote but is, in reality, at the heart of a fantastic array of things to see and do.
