Auchtertyre House is a substantial rural house that stands alone down a private road within the Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park, just 3.5 miles from Crianlarich.
Set in four acres of grounds, this much loved family home has been transformed into a warm and inviting holiday getaway. The house centres round a welcoming entrance hall with wood-burning stove and an eye-catching sandstone fire surround. The hall leads through to the bright open plan living area with its opulent kitchen area, cosy sitting area filled with natural light from the large picture windows and spacious dining area. From here French doors take you through to the covered outside areas overlooking the garden & Ben Lui mountain range beyond, the perfect place to sit and enjoy a peaceful morning coffee before the adventures of the day.
Off the kitchen area is the utility room that houses the laundry facilities, useful drying space for coats and offers direct access to the back of the house where there is plenty of space for parking. To the side of the utility room is an eminently practical shower room, ideal to warm up after a visit to the charming waterfall less than half a mile’s walk from the house. To the other side of the main entrance hall, still at ground level, lies a sizable double bedroom with en suite wet room. A separate sitting room with comfy seating and gas flame effect fire in the original stone fireplace tops off the expansive accommodation downstairs, the perfect space to cuddle up with a good book or, if the notion takes you, arrange a sing song over the grand piano.
Upstairs, up the winding wooden staircase, are five bedrooms with a mix of configurations that make the house ideal for two families holidaying together. The master double bedroom with an impressive outlook through the arched feature window from the super king-size bed has a dressing area and an en suite shower room with bath and separate shower. Accessible from both the master bedroom or a separate set of stairs leading from the open plan living area is a delightful little snug. There are then four further good-side bedrooms, a twin room with an en suite shower and three double bedrooms (one of which can be converted to a twin room to best suit your party’s needs). In keeping with the rest of the property, there is a palatial family bathroom with a double sink, free-standing bath and separate shower.
The house is accessed by half a mile of rural track (easily negotiated with care) and sits in an enclosed garden with wonderful views out towards Ben More and Stob Binnein.
Please note: Unfortunately cats are not accepted at Auchtertyre House.
The West Highland Way runs past just 500 metres from the house and can be walked or cycled in either direction (north towards Tyndrum or south to Crianlarich).
There is a ‘glamping’ business on the farm estate just 5 minutes’ walk down the road – this is separated from the house by 2 acres of woodland and fields so is out of sight and earshot, but does have the convenience of having a well-stocked farm shop that guests can make use of. There is also a café with arts and crafts in easy walking distance, via the underpass at the end of the drive.
The house is surrounded my munros and corbetts to ‘bag’ and there are extensive woodland and hill paths to explore, as well as some lovely walks along the banks of the River Fillan with some pretty waterfalls to look out for. Small amounts of gold have been found in the river so you can have a go at prospecting (equipment hire nearby). Fishing permits are available from the pub in Crianlarich.
Crianlarich (3.5 miles), at the foot of the imposing Ben More, has a village shop and a hotel bar and restaurant. Its well-connected train station has regular services to Glasgow, Oban and Fort William and there is even a sleeper service down to London. The nearest supermarket is in Killin (17.5 miles) where there are a selection of pubs and restaurants to choose from.
Being set within the Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park you are well-placed for the various events held there throughout the year. Watersports are available on Loch Lomond itself and waterbus services run out to various points on the loch to allow you to explore further.
The village of Tyndrum (2 miles) has a petrol station, The Green Welly Stop, where there is a gift shop with a fine range of whisky on offer. There is also an excellent café, a pub/restaurant serving delicious meals and an information centre in Tyndrum. The Glencoe Mountain Resort (21 miles) offers skiing, snowboarding and mountain biking and is only half an hour’s drive away.
