Dunbartonshire
Broadly speaking West and East Dunbartonshire cover the area to the north and west of Glasgow, taking in part of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, the southern shores of Loch Lomond itself, the Campsie Fells (excellent for walking) and the Kilpatrick Hills.
Within its bounds are numerous attractive villages, such as Drymen and Killearn, which are home to well-heeled Glaswegians who prefer to live away from the city's bustle.
Dunbarton itself (the name means Fort of the Britons) is an ancient settlement which has a famous castle set on Dunbarton Rock dominating the Clyde. It is easy to appreciate what its strategic importance would have been through the ages. Nearby are scenic Loch Long and Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Hill House at Helensburgh.
